Course modules

  • Introduction: The family of Microsoft products
    This module will introduce you to the family of Microsoft Search products. You will compare and contrast Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0 search, Microsoft Search Server 2008, and the standard and enterprise editions of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS). Each product will be compared in a matrix detailing indexing architecture, content sources, security, features, end-user interface, and query syntax operators. This high-level overview will provide adequate visibility into all of your search options.
  • Architecture: The indexing & querying processes
    This module will provide an in-depth explanation of the indexing and querying processes for MOSS 2007. You will begin by learning about the specifics of the indexing process that include the filter daemon, protocol handlers and ifilters. You’ll then learn about the metadata extractor, content indexer, word breaker, noise word and stemmer plug-ins. Word lists, shadow indexes, the master index and the property store database are discussed before wrapping up with the query engine and query process.
  • Configuration I: Content Sources, Search Scopes, and Keywords & Best Bets
    This module provides all you need to know about content sources, search scopes, keywords and best bets. You’ll begin by learning how to deploy and configure content sources for SharePoint sites, WSS sites, files shares and partner sites. You’ll then learn how to properly deploy search scopes for your content sources at the site collection level. Finally, you’ll walk through the process for creating and deploying keywords and best bets throughout your environment.
  • Configuration II: Federated Search, Managed Properties, & iFilters
    This module will explain federated search, managed properties and iFilters. You will obtain a high-level overview of search federation from a business perspective. You’ll learn about the available federation connectors and location components before moving on to an overview of content types and managed properties. Finally, you’ll search for content based upon custom managed properties.
  • Configuration III: Search Center Tabs & the Search UI
    This module covers the customization of the search center UI and search center tabs. You will create new tabs, get educated on the components that make up the search page, and configure the search box and search results web parts.
  • Optimization: Index Performance & tuning, logging & reporting
    This course concludes with a module covering index performance tuning, logging, and reporting. Tuning topics include such topics as continuous propagation, URL removal from search results, details of the indexer performance settings and the configuration of crawler impact rules. Performance tuning is also discussed and provides education around index balancing and performance guidelines. Reporting an logging will focus on performance counters, starvation, architecture decisions, logging and site action reporting.

Prerequisites

  • Completion of SharePoint Administration and Planning Bootcamp – 2007 or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with SharePoint Products and Technologies and general Windows Server 2008 administration duties
  • Any requirements documentation you may have, so you can be more involved in our daily discussions!

  • Any desktop browser that supports Adobe Flash on any platform
